Rough cut

We watched the rough cut and then we decided to make changes on the things we thought needed improving, from the audience feedback.

Feedback

This is some of the feedback that we got when we showed the rough cut of the sequence. With their advice we improved it more with what they thought should be changed to make it look more professional.

Getting our Evaluation Questions

On Friday we got our evaluation questions, we went through the questions in class so that we knew what we would had to do.
The questions were-
1- In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
2- How does your media product represent particular social groups?
3- What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
4- Who would be the audience for your media product?
5- How did you attract/address your audience?
6- What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
7- Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the presentation from it to the full product?
We went through all the questions and made sure we knew exactly what we need to write about in them. I would also make a prezi to make my evaluation more exciting and more easy to get around. Then i would camtasia to make a voice program in my prezi so i could get more marks and make it more different.

Final Editing

During the holidays we all as a group came to school and we finished editing the final the opening sequence. We changed all the titles and made them look more professional. We then made sure the music was all sync with the opening sequence. We also made sure that the ending of the sound was finished off and didn't end abruptly. Me made sure that the feedback that we got was redone and acknowledged. This made sure that the final piece was perfect.

Final Editing

This week we have been editing our final piece. We first put all our footage onto the computer and then we chose the scenes that we wanted for a our final piece. Then we put them all together and then choose the right parts and the correct scenes.
We then when we had the right scenes and in the right order that we wanted them to be in we added the transitions that were needed. This then made the opening sequence and we still have to add in the credits and edit it more. This will be done by the end of this week so that we stay in schedule.
We also have nearly finished the music, we have made it that there are two parts to it this is because for the credits there is one part and for the rest it is one part. They both blend together, we just have some finishing touches to be made for the final part of the music. Then we can put it into the final piece and check how well it goes and that everything is done.

Brief Plot Summary of "Flight 777"

A breif plot summary of what the opening sequence is about is that, it starts off with the main character and this is the terrorist, which is against freemasonry. The senator that is later shown has been accused of being a freemason. This is why the terrorist makes plans to bomb the plane and you see the photos of the terrorist on the tables. The senator is being accused of being a freemason which we hear about in the raido report. This gives us the information for the plot, and creates more suspense. At the end we see the terrorist leave the room in a hurry with all the plans.

Different technology used

Mood Board

This is the differnet technolgy that i have used doing this piece of work. I have used all of these for specific things in my coursework. I have used livetype for editing and titles. I have used IMovie for editing, i have used garageband for recording the sound and making the music for the opening sequence. I also have used scribd to embed documents onto my blog. I have used blogspot to record what i am doing in my coursework and for research. I have also used cameras and tripods to record the shots and scenes we took. All of these programmes helped me to make the final openeing sequence.

Mood Board

Mood Board

This is a mood board of the different types of audience that we have for the opening sequence. It shows that there are many people who would be intrested in the openeing sequence. The target audience is people aged between 16-35. This is so that they will understand it and still be intreseted in these types of movies. Also cinemas would be intreseted and production companies. There are other films that are in this genre that are similar and this is because they are also the same genre and so thriller films have the same suspense that is created.
Thriller films all have suspense created and they have similar plots because it always gets the audience wondering what will happen next. Thriller films want us to be curious to what is going to happen and they keep the audience attracted to the film.

Different shots used in sequence

Shot for Annotation

These were differnet shots that were used for the sequence, this was after we edited for the final version of the opening sequence. I have annotated them so that you can see what each of them show and how they are relevant for the genre and how they introduce new characters. Als it shows the setting and how the suspense builds up.

Shooting day

We had to make sure that we had everything with us that we needed such as the props, the camera and the tripod. We also had to make sure the lighting was right and the setting was relavent for the opening sequence. We first made sure we got all the equiptment set-up and put it in the right places. Then we put all the props where we needed them. Then we started filming the scenes that we needed.
We filmed all the scenes in one day and got all the different variety of shots that were needed to get high marks for the openeing sequence. We also took pictures of ourselves while doing this. We made sure we had everything that we needed.
This is a list of all the props we used-
-Bag

-Papers
-Table Lamps
-Radio
-Remote Control
-Boots
-Scissors
-Pliers
-Wire
All of these props were very useful for what we needed and we used all of them in our opening sequence.

New Idea

As a group we have decided that we are going to change the opening sequence ideas around. This is because the first storyboard that we did, did not have any compliated shots that we need to show we understand the task that is given.
This meant that we then had to start again with the same idea and make a whole new idea of shots. We then made the whole storyboard up, and we took out the part with the aiport scene and this was because we decided as a group that we didn't really need the airport scene because we just needed the radio report. We change the radio report from the news report. This was because it was more practical to do it from the radio.
We stayed with the original idea and just made sure that we used a varied amount of shots of the camera so that the audience find the opening sequence more interesting.

New shooting Schedule

This is the new shooting Schedule-:

Filming Schedule of: Flight 777

Garageband

I have been using Garageband to come up with the music that we will put into our opening sequence, this will make the scene have more suspense in it. Garageband has many sounds on there in which you can make your music sound like. There is a lot of variety, this way you can make it sound original. Also there are other noises that may be needed for the opening sequence, scuh as a doorbell and other door sounds. I have been experimenting with many sounds and i have come up with something that i may put into our opening sequence.

Garageband also has many instruments that you can choose from to make you music. It also has many different sounds form those instruments that you can choose from, this way this makes the sound very different from each other. You can change the volume of each sound and you can change how long you want the sound and if you want to combine two sounds in one. It is very easy to use garageband and it is very useful.

Script for thriller

we made a new storyboard so we had to make a new script, this ws because we wanted there to be more complicated shots involved.

Red Herring

Red Herring-:

A red herring diverts the audience from the truth or the item of significance.

an example of this would be an innocent person in a film that is highly suspectable, through emphasis and descriptive techniques, and this way the attention is drawn away from the guilty person.

The red herring that will be in our opening sequence will be when the news report is being played, this will take away the innocence away from the real threat in the opening scene and therefore put the blame on the other character.

Final Logo design

For our final logo design we had to choose between two designs. They were both very different because they were two different types of designs.

1st design-

2nd design-

The final one we choose was the 2nd design, this was because we decided that it was more professional and more unique. It looked more professional for our audience and for the film production image. It has a black and white color that looks very classic and minimalistic. The image looks like a film production

Live type

Today in class we looked at a new software livetype. This software is used for the films credits. We got to play around with the different videos that were on there. We got to change it by adding titles to it for the credits such as the producer and the director and famous actors. This allowed us to get a feel for what live type if like. We also got to add transitions and effects to the titles. This made the video look more exciting and more appealing to the audience. Now we have an idea of what it's like and then we can use it for making the credits for the opening sequence.

Sound Analysis

In the opening sequence of seven, it starts off with the sound starting very crumbly and then goes onto the sound of the typewriter or a scanner of somesort. This creates an effect that work is being done, and this catches the audiences attention straight away becuase they want to know what type of work is being done. Then you hear loads of blades all at once being truned on and this creates the sound of someone doing something that may be vert suspicous. It has the drum beat in the background as all of the sounds are being played and this shows the audience that it is creating the suspense as the sounds are coming and changing but there is still a beat in the background. The beat suddenly changes at 0:26 and this shows the audience that something is happening and it is all very mysterious. The sounds are like someone is making something and thos gives the audience the vibe that something is happening that is bad or wrong in a way. The sound is very mysterious and it changes the beat again at 1:13 and it become louder and this wakes the audience up and makes them more cautious as to what exacctly is happening. You then hear the words at 2:00 "you got me closer to die", this makes the audience realise that something bad is going to happen and creates the suspense more in the film.

Props list

For our opening we are going to need many props that will make the scene look real and will allow it to look more like a thriller.
First scene:
A TV - this is for the news report that will be in the scene.

Second scene:
on the table for terrorism plot
-blue prints
-pictures of the senator
-pictures of the plane
-bomb creating equipment
-letters
-notes
-research

Third scene:
-mirror
-pieces of clothing
-average bedroom items
-post it notes
 Fourth scene:
-mirror

-pieces of clothing
-average bedroom items
-change in bedding

 Fifth scene:
(outside the airport)
-suit cases
-luggage

 Sixth scene:

-flight timetable- for the filghts that are going out at that day

Making of Logo designs

These are some of the ideas that we have come up with to have as our logos.
1st design-
2nd design-:
These are just rough idead for the logo and we will change some of the designs. This is is because we want it to be very easy for the audience to see and we will change the word formatting and were they are placed.

Seven

In class we watched the film of Seven. This movie was a thriller that did very well in the box office and is 11 in the top. It was made in 1995 and is an american crime film and was written by Andrew Kevin Walker.

Saul Bass

This is a picture of Saul Bass, he was an academy award winning film maker. He is mostly known for his design on animated motion picture title sequences. he worked for many famous directors such as Alfred Hitchcock and many more. His most famous work is  "The man with the golden Arm".

Audience research

In our group we had to find out what the audience expected from thriller movies and their opening sequences. We interviewd people on what they thought about thriller films and this gave us insight into what they thought and what we should put into our thriller opening sequence. The questions that we asked were very similar to those in our questionnaire, this was so that we could compare them to the answers we get in our questionnaire and then we can get more varied feedback on thriller films.

Peliminary Task

This week we were asked to start our peliminary task which included shooting a scene of a character walking into a room and starting a short conversation with another character. This short clip had to be less than 2 minutes long and had to include match on action, shot reverse shot and the 180 degree rule. As a group we all had to discuss and come up with ideas on what to base the scene around, we came up with the idea that it would be an interview with a celebrity and a magazine interviewer. We came across lots of problems while shooting becuase they're wasn't enough tripods and we had to share which meant that we had less time to shoot. Then we also found it hard to shoot with continuity becuase our postures were not the same as the last shot taken. This was very useful making this short clip as it gave us insight into what kind of problems we were going to have in making the real opening sequence. Then when we had finally finished making the opening sequence we then started editing it and removing any unwanted parts to it and adding transitions and making sure that it was the right amount of shots we needed.

Thriller research continued

Thriller Research Continued Posters and Ratings

Thriller directors research

Alfred Hitchcock:

He is the master of suspense his films are very recognisable and one of them is Psycho. This was one of his biggest hits and it did very well in the box-office. Each of his films have exciting ans experimental camera angles in them. An example of this would be in the movie "vertigo" and their is a "Dolly Zoom" camera angle used and is achieved by the camera moving away from an object or a scene and zooming in at the same time.

Another director is Steven Spielberg:

He is a very respected and talented director although was influenced by Alfred hitchcock. Speilbergs thrillers are always set in different places and this causes more tension to the film. Some of his films include "catch me if you can" and "Jaws". Jaws was most famous for the scene in the opening when the girl is in the water and all we know is that something is going to happen. The tension builds up by the music and the camera angles. Then we see something take her and she is gone and the music stops and we know that she is dead and it must be a shark.

Todorov and Propps theories

Todorov's Theory:
-The environment starts with an equilibrium- this is where everything is as it should be in an equal balance.
-Then there is an order of a disruption and this is the disequilibrium.
-Then there is a recognition that the disorder has occurred and this is the equilibrium.
Propps character theory-
Vladimir propp created a theory for media texts and productions it was-
1.The villain (struggles against the hero)
2.The donor (prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object)
3.The (magical) helper (helps the hero in the quest)
4.The princess (person the hero marries, often sought for during the narrative)
5.Her father
6.The dispatcher (character who makes the lack known and sends the hero off)
7.The hero or victim/seeker hero, reacts to the donor, weds the princess

Research into thriller genre

Psycho is an American suspense movie directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The film is about a secretary who is hiding in a motel after embezzling from her employer and the motels owner who starts to have feelings for her. The films has many aspects to it that makes it a thriller such as the music in the opening sequence and the characters reactions. The shots that are used in the film capture the audiences attention and make them guess to as what will happen in the end.

Research into McGuffin and Thriller genre

A McGuffin is a element of a plot that catches the viewers attention or that catches the viewers attention becuase it is very intresting. Sometimes, the specific nature of the McGuffin is not important to the plot because it could be just showing how good the plot really is and this makes the audince like the movie. The McGuffin can sometimes be ambiguous, completely undefined, generic or left open to interpretation. The MacGuffin is common in films, especially thrillers. Commonly, though not always, the McGuffin is the central focus of the film in the first scene, and later declines in importance as the struggles of the characters are shown. Sometimes the MacGuffin is even forgotten by the end of the film.

I also watched a thriller film called taken. This film was very effective because it used things such as digetic and non-digetic sound throughout the film. This made the audience more attentive while watching the film. It was about a father and he was a FBI agent and his daughter had been kidnapped. The father was retired but he was going to do anything he could to find her. It had a very compelling plot. I found it to be a very useful film and it gave me much insight into thriller films. It used many camera angles in it to show the different expressions on the characters faces and capture each emotion.

Thriller Presentation

For more information on Thriller movies we had to make presentations in our groups of four. This presentation was about thriller movies. We decided that each of us should do a slide and we split it up into the intro of thriller movies, examples of thriller movies, what are thriller movies and the summary of all the slides.

Thriller Films presentation

Conventions of a thriller

Today in class we looked at thriller conventions and we reviewed some opening sequnces of films. The first one we looked at was Insomnia, this had many names at the beginning such as the Director, famous actors, casting, Co-producer, Music, Editor and screenplay and there were many more. In the clip of insomnia there was textures used such as fading and shots of the blood close-up. These were very effective because it made the audience unsure about what was happening. There was also sound used and this builds tension in the film and also got more loudewr when the title "Insomnia" came on the screen. Then suddenly the music stopped when the plane was going over the trees. The shot that is show here is very useful becuase it shows blood droplets going on the shirt. This is very effective because it is an extreme close-up and it makes the audience very puzzuled as to what exactly is going on.

Thursday, 28 January 2010

In this video it shows the opening of the thriller film Catch me if you can, this opening is very effective because it gives an insight into what will happen in the film but also leaves the suspense as to what will happen in the movie. It tells you all the characters names and what their roles they play in the movie and this is also done while the story is being told. It is done in animation which gives more of a comedy feel to the movie, although it is a thriller movie. It uses many techniques without using dialogue, it changes from one place to the other very smoothly and it feels very compelling, you want to know what will happen next. They also use colour to show times of danger when one character may be in trouble and this is very exciting and catches the audiences attention to the clip it also builds the tension in areas of the clip. Overall i feel that this clip has been made in a very exciting way. We also went thorugh the brief and mark scheme for what exactly we had to ensure was in the video that we would make to get full marks. This gave us an idea of what we had to do and make sure was in the video.
After watching the clips we then had to set-up our blog accounts, we did this by logging onto blogspot.com and making an account. We then later had to learn how to edit using the software on the Mac computers. We each got into our groups and had to make our own video clips and edit them making them into our own short videos. We had to use things like transitions, music, colour, titles. These things made our videos very exciting to watch and we had fun making them. We then went around and watched every single groups and this gave us insight into what other things we could have done. This gave us the knowledge of how to edit video clips and use imovie.

Setting up Equiptment

We then had to make our groups, we did this by making a group of four people that we know that we could work with and also poeple that have a variety of skills. Then we were given our video cameras and had to learn how to set them up. We also got to use them and make still images of different types of camera angles. This taught us how to use cameras with a variety of shots. We then got to see all the groups different shots and this showed us the different interpretations of one shot.

Thriller Movies Research

For our AS coursework, we found out about the theme of what type of opening sequence we were going to make. This was thriller movies. We were assigned to do some research on this topic. For my research i watched some thriller movies such as The Dark knight and Psycho. This gave me more insight to what thriller movies were all about. I then researched it on google and found many intresting things such as Thrillers are characterized by fast pacing, frequent action, and resourceful heroes who must thwart the plans of more powerful and better equipped villians.
